Oakridge Mall Re-Development: Part 1

During the preliminary proposal stages of the Oakridge Mall redevelopment in 2016, H.Y. Engineering sought stormwater quality treatment solutions capable of capturing the 90th percentile average annual rainfall runoff event and removing 80% of total suspended solids (TSS). To meet these requirements, the Jellyfish® Filter was chosen as the ideal solution as it satisfied both the LEED 6.2 credit and the City’s new upcoming Rainwater Management Bylaw.

75 and 95 SW Marine Drive

For the project at 75th and 95th Marine Drive, each development used a 4-foot x 6-foot Langley Concrete vault with 27-inch long filter cartridges and 40-inch long filter cartridges, respectively. The devices were installed in the corner of the parkade, adjacent to parking spaces, taking up very little space from the revenue-generating parking lot. A 36-inch diameter manhole was cast into a concrete vault lid in the floor above the device, which allows easy access to the device for maintenance workers and vacuum truck service from street level.

W1 - Marine Gardens

Concord Pacific redeveloped and built 514 market residential units over two high- rise towers, 70 market rental units, and a 37 space day-care within a six and a half story mid-rise building. The new multi-building complex has a gross area of more than 455,000 square feet plus 411 underground parking spaces. This redevelopment is located at the heart of a development plan for increased density by way of towers, creating a transit-oriented hub that is adjacent to the Marine Drive Canada Line station. Treatment of stormwater for this development was critical due to the sites proximity to the Fraser River and the various fish that navigate it’s waters including: the White Sturgen, Salmon, and Steelhead Trout.

Green Energy Sustainable Facilities

The Iberdrola group is a public, multinational, electric utility company based in Spain, known for their leadership in energy production. Iberdrola took the lead construction and development role of two new identical green energy biomass facilities in British Columbia, Canada. One biomass plant is situated outside the City of Merritt, which is 270 km northeast of Vancouver, located at the confluence of the Nicola and Coldwater Rivers within the Nicola Valley. The other biomass facility is in Fort St. James, which is a former fur trading post in north-central British Columbia, roughly 600 km North of Vancouver, located on the southeastern shore of Stuart Lake.

The City of Vancouver takes environmental stewardship seriously, and has an action plan to become the “Greenest City in the World” by 2020. Smart redevelopment fits within that plan. Vancouver’s Chinatown, located between Gastown and the downtown Financial and Central Business Districts, is undergoing a revitalization that will preserve its history and cultural identity,while implementing some of the latest in clean technology. One example is a Main Street site that has been redeveloped by Bosa Properties to erect anew 18-story 192-unit luxury apartment building with commercial retail on the ground floor.
