Sorbtive Media retrofit of stormwater facilities protects Great Lakes

Sturgeon Creek water quality monitoring indicated too much phosphorus was being discharged, and then entering the already impaired Lake Erie. Phosphorus loading and eutrophication of Lake Erie and the Great Lakes Basin has been an ongoing concern for several decades, with the issue gaining increased binational attention in recent years. In particular, dissolved phosphorus feeds algal blooms, and as algae dies it begins to decay consuming a massive amount of oxygen from the water. This leads to dead zones, which are very harmful to the ecology, specifically fish. Certain types of algae also release neurotoxins, posing health hazards to pets, birds and people.

Innovative Stormwater Management Practices at IMAX Headquarters

As part of the Ontario Ministry of Environment 's (MOE) Showcasing Water Innovation Program, the IMAX Corporation Headquarters parking lot redevelopment combined innovative stormwater treatment technologies with LID applications. A Jellyfish catch basin unit is used to accept surface runoff from an asphalt parking lot ahead of a bioretention system and a Sorbtive Vault is applied downstream of the effluent discharged from the bioretention cell for providing nutrient polishing treatment, targeting a high level (80+%) of phosphorus removal.
